Plumbing · Residential service & repair · Owner + 3 techs
on Jobber
Jobber runs our whole day: quote in the driveway, schedule on the spot, invoice before I leave. Automated payment reminders alone cut our receivables in half. Reporting gets thin as you grow, and the per-user cost climbs — but for a shop under 10 people it's the easiest recommendation in the category.

Adjusters stopped arguing with us once every photo came timestamped and pinned to the property. Techs actually use it because there's zero filing — open the app, shoot, done. Wish reports were more customizable, and per-user pricing adds up with big crews, but it's the one tool I'd keep if I had to cut everything else.

Roofing · Residential retail roofing · 6 sales reps
on Roofr
Measurements come back fast and have been within a couple percent of hand-measured every time we checked. Proposals look better than anything we made in-house and homeowners sign same-day. The CRM side is still maturing compared to AccuLynx — we use Roofr for sales and keep production elsewhere.

Painting · Residential repaints · Owner + 5 painters
on PaintScout
Once your production rates are dialed in, two different estimators produce the same number — that consistency is worth the subscription by itself. Setup took a couple of weekends and the price stings for a solo operator. Best for painting companies with at least one dedicated estimator.

Nothing else gives us this level of visibility — marketing ROI by campaign, tech scorecards, real-time P&L by job type. But be honest about what you're signing up for: implementation took us a full quarter, and the cost only makes sense north of maybe $3M revenue. Don't buy it hoping to grow into it.

Electrical · Residential service · 2 trucks
on Housecall Pro
The customer-facing side is the strength — on-my-way texts, online booking, easy card payments. Customers comment on how professional it feels. Downsides: price creeps up as you add features, and job costing is basic. Solid middle ground between a calendar app and the enterprise platforms.

We went from 40-something Google reviews to over 200 in under a year without anyone on staff thinking about it. The automation triggers off completed jobs and just runs. $75/mo felt steep for a 'review tool' until I priced what those rankings would cost in ads. Set it up once, forget it exists.

Flexible boards mean it molds to your process instead of the other way around — that's also the trap. Spend the time up front designing your workflow or you end up with a messy pipeline nobody trusts. Integrations cover most of the roofing stack. Support has been responsive when automations misfire.

The free tier is genuinely free, which is how we started. GPS time tracking ended the arrival-time debates, and the job costing data changed how we bid maintenance contracts. Gripes: the app occasionally lags on older phones, and equipment tracking feels like an afterthought. Payroll export to QuickBooks works clean.

First platform where our estimates, budgets, and actuals live in one place and actually reconcile at closeout. The learning curve is real — plan on a month of ugly before it clicks. Best fit for builders who care about job costing; if you just want scheduling, it's more tool than you need.
